Heavy Bike Service in Brighton & Hove
The full strip-down and rebuild, done at your home for £70.
The Heavy Service is everything in the Light Service, plus the deeper work that a bike needs once a year — or urgently, if it’s been ridden through a Brighton winter of salt and rain and never touched.
Everything in the Light Service, plus:
– Wheels trued and checked for broken spokes
– Jockey wheels removed from the rear mech, cleaned and regreased
– Bottom bracket inspected and adjusted
– Pedals inspected and tightened
– Wheel hubs inspected and adjusted, bearings regreased or replaced as needed
– Headset inspected and readjusted
– Brake pads inspected and repositioned
– Brake inner and outer cables removed, checked, replaced if needed
– Gear inner and outer cables removed, checked, replaced if needed
– Chain checked for wear
– Cassette, freewheel and chainset checked for wear
– Derailleur hanger checked and straightened as required
– Any unserviceable part from the list above replaced with new
When you need the Heavy rather than the Light
Book the Heavy Service if any of these sound familiar: the bike has been standing unused for a year or more; it’s done a full winter of commuting without a service; the gears won’t index however much you fiddle; there’s a grinding or knocking you can’t place; or the wheels, hubs and cables have never been serviced since you bought it.
Salt air and hill starts are hard on a bike. Bearings and cables are the parts that fail quietly — you don’t notice until the day the brakes don’t quite stop you.
How it works
Same as always. We ask about the bike when you book so we arrive with the right spares. We cycle to you. We quote before we start, with no obligation. If a part is needed that we don’t have with us, we come back with it and there’s no charge for the second visit.
You pay £70 on completion, if satisfied, and the work carries a two-week guarantee.
Charged by time, not by package
Services are charged on a time basis, which means unusual bikes and bespoke jobs can be quoted fairly rather than squeezed into a fixed price. Because Bruce has been instructing on cycle mechanics courses since 2000, the work goes quickly — and quicker work costs you less.
